What Is the CAT4 Level X Test?

The CAT4 Level X test assesses cognitive abilities in Year 2 students (ages 6-7). it was designed by GL Assessment to identify strengths, weaknesses, and potential for personalized learning. The test is available in digital and paper-based formats.

The CAT4 test for Year 2 is structured around four principal cognitive domains: Verbal, Non-verbal, Quantitative, and Spatial abilities.

  • Non-verbal: In this part, students are tested on their ability to solve problems using shapes and patterns disconnected from language.
  • Verbal: This section gauges a child’s reasoning ability using words and language.
  • Quantitative: This segment tests a child’s numerical reasoning abilities.
  • Spatial: This section tests a child’s understanding of space, shapes, and measurements.

Each of these cognitive domains is evaluated using dedicated test sections. The exam is divided into two parts, with two subsections in each part:

Part 1 No. of Questions Time Allotted (in Minutes)
Figures (non-verbal reasoning) 24 12
Words (verbal reasoning) 24 10
Part 2
Numbers (quantitative reasoning) 18 10
Shapes (spatial ability) 18 11
Total 84 43

Quantitative Reasoning Practice Questions (Numbers)

Each question provides a series of numbers that have a rule. Use the rule to determine which number will come next in the series.

Question #6

5     7     8     10     11     13     14     16     17     ?

A. 15
B. 18
C. 19
D. 20
E. 21

Correct Answer & Explanation:

In this series, the pattern is as follows: first, 2 is added, then 1 is added, then 2 is added, then again 1 is added; then the pattern repeats itself: 2 is added, then again 1 is added, then 2 is added, then again 1 is added, and so on.

The pattern is: +2, +1, +2, +1, +2, +1, +2, +1, …

The last three numbers in the series are 14, 16, and 17; 16 is larger than 14 by 2, and 17 is larger than 16 by 1. Therefore, the next number in the series should be larger than 17 by 2.

17 + 2 = 19

Therefore, the correct answer is (C) – 19.

Question #7

0     7     14     21     28     35     ?

A. 35
B. 42
C. 57
D. 49
E. 40

Correct Answer & Explanation:

The correct answer is (B) – 42.

In this series, each successive number is increased by 7.

The pattern is: +7, +7, +7, +7, …

The final number in this sequence is 35. So, we’ll add 7 to this number and get the correct answer:

35 + 7 = 42

Therefore, (B) – 42, is the correct answer.

Question #8

4     66     3     66     2     66     ?

A. 33
B. 36
C. 66
D. 1
E. 5

Correct Answer & Explanation:

The correct answer is (D) – 1.

A pattern is established in the given sequence of numbers where numbers starting from 4 descend with an alternate number 66 falling in between. The last two numbers in the sequence are 2 and 66. Therefore, it is evident that the next number will be less than 2, which is 1.

Spatial Ability Practice Questions (Shapes)

Choose the answer choice that contains the given shape. The shape must keep its size and orientation.

Question #9

Boost Your Child’s CAT4 Year 2 Success With 10 Simple Strategies

1. Early Practice Power:

  • Realistic Tests: Mimic the real CAT4 format and timed sections as they get closer to the exam date.
  • Fun First: Start with short, lighthearted sessions emphasizing learning, not perfection.
  • Celebrate Growth: Focus on improvement across practice tests, building confidence for the real thing.

2. Reading is Key:

  • Variety Sparks Joy: Explore picture books, silly poems, and non-fiction based on their interests.
  • Talk About It: Ask questions after reading (“What was your favorite part?”, “Can you guess what happens next?”).
  • Make It a Routine: Daily reading, even 10 minutes, boosts vocabulary and comprehension.

3. Play = Learning:

  • Beyond Puzzles: Board games, building with blocks, and drawing challenges all develop strategic thinking.
  • Explain the “Why”: While playing, discuss how they figure out what piece fits, or what strategy works best.
  • Open-Ended Toys: Materials like clay, playdough, or building sets with no singular purpose let children create and test their own ideas.

4. Everyday Math

  • Cooking: Double a recipe, talk about measuring ingredients, and add quantities of toppings.
  • Shopping: Compare prices, estimate totals, and let them practice with small amounts of money.
  • Tell ‘Number Stories’: “You had 4 crayons, now you have 6! How many did you find?”

5. Healthy Habits Help

  • Sleep = Superpower: Well-rested kids remember better & focus longer. Aim for consistent sleep & wake-up times.
  • Fuel for Focus: Balanced meals and snacks keep energy stable, avoiding blood sugar crashes that make the brain fuzzy.
  • Move to Learn: Physical activity boosts oxygen to the brain & helps kids release built-up energy.

6. Praise Their Effort:

  • Beyond “Smart”: Celebrate hard work, persistence, and willingness to try new strategies.
  • Specific Wins: “I noticed how you didn’t give up on that puzzle!” is more powerful than general praise.
  • Mistakes = Learning: If they get stuck, help without giving the answer – guide them to discover it themselves.

7. Short & Sweet

  • Respect Their Attention Span: Young learners benefit most from brief sessions (15-20 minutes), with more breaks as needed.
  • Mix It Up: Within a prep session, switch between a practice question set, reading time, or a quick puzzle game.
  • Signs of Overload: Fidgeting, losing focus, or frustration mean it’s time for a break!

8. Tech as a Tool: Use educational apps or websites to make learning interactive:

9. Teacher Teamwork

  • Proactive Communication: Don’t wait for parent-teacher conferences! Ask how your child performs in areas the CAT4 measures.
  • At-Home Support: Ask the teacher for suggestions on what skills to focus on, or if they have specific practice ideas.

10. Calm Their Nerves

  • Deep Breaths: Teach “belly breathing”: Imagine blowing up a balloon in their tummy as they breathe in, then let it slowly deflate as they exhale.
  • Visualize Success: Have them close their eyes and picture themselves feeling confident and doing their best on the test.
  • It’s Just a Test: Emphasize it’s one way to see where they’re strong, not a make-or-break moment.
