What Does the CAT4 Level F Consist of?

The CAT4 exam for year 9 and year 10 consists of four batteries. Each includes two subsections:

  • Quantitative Reasoning Battery: Number Series and Number Analogies subsections
  • Verbal Reasoning Battery: Verbal Classification and Verbal Analogies subsections
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning Battery: Figure Classification and Figure Matrices subsections
  • Spatial Ability Battery: Figure Analysis and Figure Recognition subsections

So overall, there are 8 different subsections on the CAT4 test.

The exam itself has three parts, each with its own time limits and amount of questions:

Part 1

  • Figure Classification: 24 questions, 10 minutes
  • Figure Matrices: 24 questions, 10 minutes

Part 2

  • Verbal Classification: 24 questions, 8 minutes
  • Verbal Analogies: 24 questions, 8 minutes
  • Number Analogies: 18 questions, 10 minutes

Part 3

  • Number Series: 18 questions, 8 minutes
  • Figure Analysis: 18 questions, 9 minutes
  • Figure Recognition: 18 questions, 9 minutes

Below are practice questions for each of the question types. For more practice questions in addition to the ones below, visit this excellent test prep page.

Verbal Reasoning Practice Questions

Verbal Analogy Question

The first pair of words go together in a certain way. Choose the word that goes together with the third word similarly.

prune → shrub : mend →

A. store
B. accessory
C. wear
D. sweater
E. travel

Correct Answer & Explanation:

The correct answer is (D) – sweater. A shrub has to be pruned. A sweater has to be mended. In this case, the first word (a noun) is paired with an action (the second word) that might be performed to tend to that noun.

Verbal Classification Question

Choose the word that best fits with the given group of words.

frame | chandelier | art

A. couch
B. shelf
C. vase
D. pillow
E. table

Correct Answer & Explanation:

The correct answer is (B) – shelf. A frame, chandelier, art, and shelf are all things you can hang.

Non-Verbal Reasoning Practice Questions

Figure Matrices Question

Choose the answer choice that follows the pattern and completes the matrix.

CAT4 level F figure matrices practice question

CAT4 level F figure matrices practice question answer choices

Correct Answer & Explanation:

The correct answer is 5.

In this question, the rules that connect the two figures of the first row are: 1- The figures contain a star with a shape inside, where the number of sides of the shape is 1 less than the number of points of the star.

2- The number of points of the star increases by 3, as well as the number of sides of the inner polygon when moving from left to right. 3-The colors of the shape swap, i.e. the inner shape takes the color of the outer shape and vice-versa.

The only option that fits this description is the 5th one.

Figure Classification Question

Choose the answer that shares the same connection/characteristic as the three given images.

Correct Answer & Explanation:

The correct answer is 1.

In this question, the three figures are all shapes that have the following common features: Every outer shape contains the diminished version of its body (tail) in three different shadings, where the color fades more and more when moving toward the tip of the outer shape.

The only shape that fits this description is the 1st one.

Quantitative Reasoning Practice Questions

Number Analogy Question

Choose the number that completes the third pair so that it demonstrates the same relationship as the first two pairs.

[27 → 7]       [36 → 10]       [63 → ?]

A. 22
B. 21
C. 19
D. 25
E. 23

Correct Answer & Explanation:

The correct answer is (C) – 19.

Look for the pattern in the first series of numbers. We get from 27 to 7 by subtracting 20 (-20) or by dividing by 3 and then subtracting 2 (÷3 – 2).

We get from 36 to 10 by subtracting 26 (-26) or by dividing by 3 and then subtracting 2 (÷3 – 2). Since the pattern must be the same, we also get (÷3 – 2) as the pattern for the third pair. Therefore, the next series of numbers should follow the same pattern, meaning that the rule between 63 and ? should be (÷3 – 2): 63 ÷3 – 2 = 21 – 2 = 19, meaning that the correct answer will be 19.

Number Series Question

What number comes next in the series?

3     23     6     20     9     ?

A. 18
B. 17
C. 16
D. 15
E. 14

Correct Answer & Explanation:

The correct answer is (B) – 17.

In this series, the pattern is as follows: first, 20 is added, then 17 is subtracted, then 14 is added again, then 11 is subtracted, and so on. This means the difference decreases by 3 with alternated signs.

The pattern is: +20, -17, +14, -11, …

The last two numbers in the series are 20 and 9, where 9 is smaller than 20 by 11, so the next number in the series should be larger than 9 by 8.

9 + 8 = 17

Therefore, 17 is the correct answer.

Spatial Ability Practice Questions

Figure Analysis Question

Choose the answer choice that shows the final product of the unfolded punched-in paper.

CAT4 test year 10 figure analysis practice question

CAT4 test year 10 figure analysis practice question - answer choices

Correct Answer & Explanation:

The correct answer is 2.

  • First, the square was folded vertically in half from bottom to top.
  • Then, the bottom half is folded in quarters, again from bottom to top. Now, only the upper quarter is visible.
  • Then, two holes were punched in the remaining quarter: one near the top-right corner and the other near the middle of the crease.
  • Since the paper was folded in half twice, the holes were punched through four layers of paper. The holes will mirror vertically twice, according to the creases (the creases act as mirrors).
  • Therefore, when the paper is unfolded, it will have eight holes: 2 holes x 4 layers = 8 holes, as described above. They are all aligned at the figure’s middle or right positions, forming a pattern like the one described in the 2nd choice.

Figure Recognition Question

Choose the answer choice that contains the given shape. The shape must keep its size and orientation.

Correct Answer & Explanation:

The correct answer is 2.

The figure shows a kind of T-shape where the tail is directed vertically down. The dimensions of the shape fit those of the options box. Despite a lot of other not-related lines, you can see that the only option that contains such a shape with these features is the 2nd one.

Understand the CAT4 Level F Test Results

Once a student completes a test, their Raw Score is determined based on the number of correctly answered questions.

This score is then compared to the scores of other students within the same age range to calculate three normative scores: Standard Age Scores (SAS), National Percentile Rank (NPR), and Stanines (ST).

SAS compares the student’s score with the average score of their age group, which is standardized to 100. This means that two students from different age groups who achieve the same SAS score have equivalent scores compared to their respective age group’s averages.

NPR indicates how a student’s score compares to their same-age peers.

ST categorizes scores into nine bands (1-9), with each band proportionately corresponding to a different SAS score indicating a different level of performance.

The average CAT4 score is 100, or in Stanines 4 to 6. Scoring higher than this average is considered a good score on the CAT4 test.

Conclusion and Additional CAT4 Guides

The CAT4 Level E test (Year 8) is a vital tool that measures cognitive abilities across a broad range of academic subjects.

By starting early with practice tests and drills, you can familiarize your child with the test structure, content, and format, which will build their confidence and develop the necessary skills to excel in the exam.

In addition, supplementing preparation techniques such as creating a study plan, assessing practice test scores, and identifying areas that need improvement will increase your child’s chances of success on the CAT4 Level E test and beyond.
